Shadows on the Pavement follows the paths of Moscow delinquents who failed to adopt the Soviet way of life.
The work features the Rock On Bones phenomenon, a name given to illicit recordings of Western pop music made from discarded medical X rays and sold on street corners.
In 1959, a Dior catwalk show took place in Moscow and photographer Howard Sochurek photographed the models for Life magazine. Later in life, Sochurek became interested in X rays and other forms of medical imaging and wrote a book on the subject.
Shadows on the Pavement was Margarita Gluzberg’s new performance lecture exploring historical cultural contamination and its future transmissions.
ABOUT MARGARITA GLUZBERG
Born in Moscow, Margarita Gluzberg is an artist who has lived and worked in London since 1979. Her practice encompasses drawing, performance, sound installation, photography and moving image.
At the time of this event, her work had been exhibited and performed internationally at venues including MAC VAL in Paris, CAC in Vilnius, Rooseum in Malmö, KAde Kunsthal in the Netherlands, Lunds Konsthall in Lund, the British School at Rome, where she was a Wingate Scholar, and the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill.
She was also working with scientists at King’s College London on a project titled Rock On Bones, supported by the Wellcome Trust.
At the time, Gluzberg was Senior Research Tutor and Reader in Contemporary Visual Production at the Royal College of Art.

Shadows on the Pavement formed part of Gluzberg’s wider research into Rock On Bones, examining illicit recordings of Western popular music made on discarded medical X rays in the Soviet Union. The project connected histories of music, circulation, medical imaging and cultural exchange.
