The NiNES Peckham
On 23 November 2016, Sandra Johnston presented a new live work for The Performance Studio based upon her observations of situations in Peckham.
The work extended Johnston’s ongoing investigation of processes of improvisation, the assemblage of found objects, a gradual accumulation of images, and the formation of latent relationships between these objects and gestures.
Using this material and her own body, Johnston explored the geographic and psychological sensitivities uncovered from the local area.
ABOUT SANDRA JOHNSTON
Sandra Johnston is a visual artist from Northern Ireland working across site responsive performance actions, installations and drawing. Her performances centre around the notion of territory.
Johnston has presented work internationally since 1992, including inoffensive, a performance and installation commissioned by South London Gallery in 2002; Afterwards, a performance and installation commissioned by Bluecoat Gallery as part of the 4th Liverpool Biennial in 2004; Conduct Best Calculated for Obtaining Victory, a two part video installation presented at the Northern Irish Pavilion at the 51st Venice Biennale in 2004; and Cause Effect, a solo performance presented as part of SOLO performance weekend, curated by Brian Catling and Emily Smith at Modern Art Oxford in 2011.
At the time of this performance, Johnston was Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at Northumbria University. She is currently Lecturer in Fine Art (Performance) at Belfast School of Art, Ulster University.
