On 30 November 2016, Pavel Sterec presented The class struggle within every cell of your body, a new performative lecture developed especially for The Performance Studio.
The work explored the possibilities of building collective identities between our bodies and among living organisms through a reconsideration of the role of parasites in society. It formed one stage in an ongoing process of research by Sterec into relationships between human bodies, other organisms and ideas of collective identity.
The research drew upon Sterec’s findings at the parasite displays of the Natural History Museum in London. Rather than being conceived as an isolated performance, the lecture formed part of a developing body of research that was also feeding into a longer term project taking shape as a video essay titled Vital Syndicates.
The performance was presented at The Nines in Peckham as part of the 20th Made in Prague festival, which took place from 5 November to 2 December 2016. The event was organised by The Performance Studio in partnership with Czech Centre London.
ABOUT PAVEL STEREC
Pavel Sterec’s work crosses performance, object, installation and photography. His research based practice focuses on social encounters, which he transforms into conceptual installations. His works reinterpret cultural links and natural phenomena while engaging critically with the social and political status quo.
At the time of this performance, Sterec lived and worked in Prague. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and was a PhD candidate in the Studio of Photography at the Prague School of Applied Arts. Since 2015, he had been head of the Intermedia Studio at the Faculty of Fine Arts, BUT, in Brno. His work had been presented internationally, predominantly across Central and Eastern Europe.
