boyleANDshaw were among the first artists invited to work at The Performance Studio during its establishment at V22 Workspace in Bermondsey.
Their time in the studio provided a space for conversation, experimentation and the development of existing and new projects. Rather than approaching the studio with a predetermined outcome, they used it as a temporary point of focus within their wider collaborative practice.
In an interview recorded at The Performance Studio on 23 February 2012, they described the importance of having a space in which material could be brought together, ideas tested and existing projects given structure.
DEVELOPMENT
The residency formed part of the earliest period of The Performance Studio and contributed to the development of Away, subsequently presented at V22 in May 2012.
The studio was used for research, discussion, rehearsal and physical experimentation, reflecting the original intention of The Performance Studio as a space in which artists could develop work without the immediate pressure of exhibition or public presentation.
ABOUT BOYLEANDSHAW
boyleANDshaw is the collaborative practice of artists Boyle and Shaw.
Their practice developed through an ongoing exchange of ideas, materials and conversations, moving between performance, installation, sculpture, film, writing and other forms. In the surviving 2012 interview they describe experimentation rather than explanation as central to their approach, and discuss collaboration as a continuous process rather than something organised around individual finished works.
