The Performance Studio launched its Autumn season at The NINES with an evening featuring performances by Paris based artist Arianne Foks and London artist John Costi, alongside music from DJ Ed Word.
Arianne Foks presented Michel, ma belle, a new live work developed for The Performance Studio. The performance explored Michel Foucault’s concept of Heterotopia, used to describe places and spaces of otherness.
Five performers constructed situations confronting the notion of territory in its aesthetic and political form. “The Reader” provided the voice, “the Tap Dancer” the rhythm, “the Dears” interacted with the audience and “the Selfie” existed online.
Michel, ma belle was developed for The Performance Studio with the participation of Christina Lovey, Matthew Sims, Tia Yoon and Ashley Louise McNaughton.
ABOUT ARIANNE FOKS
Arianne Foks lives and works in Paris. Her practice spans performance, drawing, writing and film, often exploring a fantasised version of everyday life in order to question accepted norms. Her poetic metamorphoses and incongruous associations blur boundaries between personal realities and fictions.
Foks graduated from the École Supérieure des Beaux Arts de Toulouse in 2007. At the time of this performance, selected exhibitions and performances included Even though I’m not a tourist, Modeparcours #15, MAAC Brussels, 2015; How to do things with words, The Longest Day, Zurich, 2014; Place Publique Performances, Darling Foundry, Montréal, 2013; and Sleeping on Top of a Basement Floor, Grimmuseum, Berlin, 2012.
She had undertaken residencies at Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in China in 2006 and Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris in 2008. Since 2014, she had participated in Les Réalisateurs, an annual international artist residency programme designed by Fabrice Hyber.
JOHN COSTI
London born artist John Costi presented Culture Mating and Memory Reappropriating.
The performative presentation dealt with subjects ranging from love and loss to childhood wonderment, employing Costi’s collection of fetish objects as tools for conversation and play. His practice was described as being concerned with experience and perception.
